European Energy’s presence in Ireland

Jul 25, 2023

European Energy is a rapidly growing company within the renewable energy sector. Founded in Denmark in 2004 with an engineering background, we now consist of more than 600 employees from 39 different nationalities and operating in 29 different countries globally. In 2022, Ireland was added to that growing list of territories we are actively developing projects in.

“European Energy´s mission is to grow into a global force that champions the green transition, develop green energy solutions and encourage the world to join the movement towards a fossil free society.”
Knud Erik Andersen, Chief Executive Officer

Why Ireland?

Ireland has focused on ambitious targets in terms of renewable capacity. The country is targeting the installation of over 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, to be generated from Onshore & Offshore Wind, Solar, Battery storage and more recently via Green Hydrogen.

It has some of the best wind resources in the world, a stable economy and regulatory system and most people now support renewable energy and decarbonisation.

What are European Energy aiming to do in Ireland?

Using a combination of a local team (headed up by Irish Country Manager Barry Walsh who has over 20 years of experience in engineering, business development and renewable energy) and our significant in-house expertise in project delivery, we are aiming to develop, construct and operate renewable energy and Power-to-X projects in the Republic of Ireland, and to develop and maintain a long term presence in this market, providing jobs, investment, revenue to landowners and tax payments to the Irish state.

What is ‘Power-to-X’ and why is that important?

‘Green hydrogen’ can be produced when wind turbines or solar PV panels are connected to an electrolyser, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can be difficult to store or transport, so ‘Power-to-X’ is the process of converting this green hydrogen into a more ‘user-friendly’ fuel or product (i.e. the ‘X’).

We have commercialised a production technology that produces ‘Green e-methanol’
at competitive prices. The production is based on renewable energy sources from our wind and solar farms and CO2 from bio-waste, and the green e-methanol can be sold to our customers such as Maersk, Lego and others to fuel ships or make… LEGO!

Given Ireland’s abundant wind energy, especially offshore, there is significant potential to produce green methanol for both internal and external markets.
